• Neurotrophic Keratitis is due to infection(HSV, HZV etc), neoplastic & neurosurgery, trauma(skull base fx), ocular surgery or laser(PRP, LASIK, etc), systemic(DM, MS etc), topical medication(anesthetics, NSAIDS, etc), chemical burns, congenital, and age.
• Available temporizing therapies for Neurotrophic Keratitis are lubrication, punctal occlusion, BCL, doxycycline, autologous serum, tarsorrhaphy, conjunctival flaps, neurotrophic growth factor gtts, amniotic membrane, lamellar keratoplasty, tectonic grafts, glue.
• Principles of Neurotization is that first, a healthy cornea requires nerve input, then, peripheral nerves can regenerate. Using healthy donor nerve axons, Neurotization can repair a distal denervated target.
• Clinical outcomes for Corneal Neurotization are corneal sensation, visual acuity, recurrence of PED, and success of corneal transplantation.
